ISO-Latin-1 input support in Thot Editor
This document provides the complete list of keyboard input sequences allowing
to enter all ISO-Latin-1 characters with a standard (e.g. North American)
keyboard. These sequences were extracted from the X-Windows 11 rel 6 file
describing the compose sequences for locale support of iso8859-1 standard, and
therefore are expected to follow the appropriate standard (available in the
file /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/locale/iso8859-1/Compose ).
These input sequences are based on a three key sequence beginning with a
modifier, the Alt key or the compose key depending on the keyboard type. For
example, to obtain a `å' first press the Compose or Alt key, then type
`a' and `*'. This principle also applies to capital letters: `È' is
obtained by pressing Alt, then `e' with Shift pressed down, and the backquote
key.
Notes :
-
with Western European keyboards (like the French one) the keys commonly used
for such sequences (like backquote, tilda, @ and backslash) are themselve
obtained using the AltGr key plus another key, but these should work fine.
`È' can be obtained on a French keyboard by entering the sequence
<Alt>, <Shift> + `E', <AltGr> + `è', since backquote is mapped
on <AltGr> `è'.
-
When non-ascii characters are already mapped on the keyboard, this mapping
should work fine with Thot Editor.
-
The oelig (o and e ligature) and OElig (O and E ligature) are not part of the
ISO-Latin-1, so Thot Editor cannot display them using the
standard fonts. These characters are displayed as division sign for oelig and
multiply sign for OElig.
Rules for ISO-Latin-1 input
Most of the input sequences are based on the following rules:
-
the grave accent on a character is obtained by composing the character with a
quote: á is obtained with <Alt> a and quote.
-
the acute accent on a character is obtained by composing the character with a
backquote: à is obtained with <Alt> a and backquote.
-
the ring accent on a character is obtained by composing the character with a
star: å is obtained with <Alt> a and star.
-
the tilde accent on a character is obtained by composing the character with a
tilda: ã is obtained with <Alt> a and tilda.
-
the circumflex accent on a character is obtained by composing the character
with a circumflex: â is obtained with <Alt> a and circumflex.
-
the cedilla on a character is obtained by composing the character with a
comma: ç is obtained with <Alt> c and comma.
-
the umlaut on a character is obtained by composing the character with double
quote: ä is obtained with <Alt> a and double quote.
-
slashed characters are obtained by composing them with a slash: ø is
obtained with <Alt> o and slash.
-
ligatures are obtained by composing the first letter with the second one:
æ is obtained with <Alt> a and e.
